As we creep into April the weather is flitting between gorgeous crisp sunny days and feeling like we’ve been plunged back into the depths of winter. I think we’ll all breathe a sigh of relief when the clocks go forward and we can benefit from the extra light in our days.
The base of this ‘super-immunity’ drink is turmeric, a root similar looking to ginger that is regularly used in Indian cooking. Turmeric is an amazing functional medicine in itself. The powerful component of turmeric, curcumin, a molecule which has been proven to fight inflammation, assist in recovery from workouts, heal the digestive system, support in fighting illness and has been linked with helping to ward off cancer.
Mix 2 teaspoons of powdered turmeric (or freshly juiced if you have it) with some boiling hot water to make a paste. Then squeeze the juice of half a lemon, add 1 tsp of raw honey, stir and top up with hot water.
The curcumin in turmeric is best ingested with a little fat, so you can either add in a tsp of coconut oil or drink it with a side of avocado or a handful of walnuts, all of which are ‘good’ fats which support brain health and glowing skin.
If your kids are running manic around you and you need that energy boost this is an excellent drink to try instead of your mid-morning coffee. However, as this super-immunity drink is an energy provider, avoid drinking it at night and try it with your breakfast or as a mid-afternoon pick me up instead.
Warning – Turmeric is really… YELLOW. You will get yourself a bit of a yellow moustache drinking this super-immunity drink. So make sure you give your mouth a wipe and a rinse after you finish your drink.
tsp powdered turmeric or 20ml freshly juiced turmeric
1 tsp raw honey
Juice of half a lemon
200ml boiled filtered water
Stir the drink together and enjoy! Take on a daily basis to help keep your immunity high and improve your gut health.
