Beating the heatwave with a babe

Beating the heatwave with a babe

Ladies and gents – it’s the time you’ve all been waiting for – summer! …and not just any summer, but recently, we’ve been setting records for some of the hottest days in decades! That can mean only one thing, right?! Carefree Pimms in the park, sunsoaking and ice cream munching… But wait! You have a beautiful little babe now, and the happiness that this heat usually brings you, is now pure dread. Worrying about keeping your angel hydrated and cool has become the task of the moment and its HARD, especially because you’re so hot too! And you’re wondering how you ever used to cope in the heat, and why you ever loved summer so much, because being the super parent that you are, your concerns lie entirely with your clammy little dumpling… Well we’re here to help – check out our top tips below, for how to keep your baby (and you!) a little cooler this summer!

  1. It might sound obvious, but don’t overdress you’re little one in this heat. Although, as an adult, it might seem socially unacceptable to run around in nothing more than a nappy, somehow babies seem to get away with it, so let them have their fun! And as and when clothes are a necessity, keep them thin, light and breathable!

  2. Indulge your baby in an extra bath on super hot days. Between maybe being a little bit bored and frustrated because all the usual play activities are off the cards and just generally feeling hot and sticky all day, your baby is likely to really enjoy a cool lunchtime bath instead of the usual trip to the park. Let them let off steam by splashing around in something that is simultaneously de-clamming and lowing their body temp! We would recommend about 34/35°C as this is just few degrees cooler than a regular bath. Remember, do not give your little one a COLD bath as this is just as bad for them as being too hot! You just want to help them feel more comfy!
  3. Open windows and doors where possible. Although you might think that letting the warm air in is a bad idea, ultimately the ventilation will allow for some movement in the air and a little breeze, which is not only cooling but also much nicer than being stuck in a stuffy house for the whole day!
  4. Ice, ice, baby! If you’ve already got all the fans you could wish for and they’re blowing around like mad, but to little avail, try this trick! Fill a bowl with ice and place it just in front of the fan (although not blocking the air circulation). The ices cools the air directly in front of the fan, which is then blown around the room and thus makes the room a slightly more bearable temperature! But remember that evenings get cooler, so day time heat management measures won’t be the same overnight!
  5. Keep some cool water on hand all day long. In a bottle, glass or beaker, just make sure you’ve got some water in the fridge or in a cool box that your baby can sip on throughout the day. Dehydration is adults is a huge health issue during the hotter summer months, so I cannot stress enough how important it is for babies! But rather than room temp water, to help them stay cool, as well as hydrated, something a little chilled will no doubt be appreciated!

With these tips under your belt, I hope that the summer becomes easier to cope with! And please do drop us a line if you have any other life saving tips for parents and their babes in summer!
